Changing the standard of thinking.

My New ENT: Dr. Mark Tabor

Dr. Mark TaborYesterday was my 6th visit to Dr. Tabor, and he’s really growing on me. For those who are new to the “show,” I had the same ENT for nearly a decade before he retired, and he passed me on to his other CF-knowledgeable doctor in the same office. After my first surgery in 6 years followed by a continuation of my headaches and a bad CT scan, my CF doctors referred me to Dr. Tabor for a second opinion and treatment at the same hospital as clinic: Tampa General Hospital in the USF Health building.

He’s got a really high-tech endoscope system that puts the scope images onto a 17″ HD monitor and has the ability and willingness to record office cleanings and surgery in full HD for his geeky patients with a strong stomach. We had a mis-communication as I was about to go under for my 10th sinus surgery of my long and storied CF career so I will have to wait until my next time to get my hands on what happens when I’m asleep. I missed my septoplasty, but my next surgery will include drilling, which I think will be much more compelling footage… at least for me. Here is some fascinating, graphic video of the last cleaning I had before my January surgery. Thanks to my dad for editing it with my new iMovie ’11 when he was here in December. (Please do not hit play if you don’t want to see nose hairs, slimy mucous membranes, or boogers. Please do hit play if you are awesome.)

Can’t Get No Satisfaction

No Satisfaction

Where's my satisfaction?

Sometimes my life feels like the song: Can’t Get No Satisfaction. Friday is yet another landmark day for us in our adventures with my newly troublesome sinuses. It’s beginning to look like my long honeymoon without surgery has come crashing completely down since October. I have a follow-up with my ENT Friday after lunch to decide if we need to be more aggressive with his reconstruction of my head.

The scoop

One of the most annoying things for the last year or more is the constant smell in my nose. It varies between smelling like a wet dog and soggy Corn Chex, depending on the infection of the month. Far, far worse are my headaches, even though they aren’t as persistent as the smell is. Every morning is a new day with a ton of gunk in my eyes, a completely stuffed nose, and that smell.

I take a lot of CF in stride, but this is getting on my last nerves. How many times can I tell clients [Read more…]

Seriously, Just a Quick Update

NewsThere hasn’t been too much to write about lately, other than the possibility of another sinus surgery (we’ll know Friday), and a lot of work stuff that will bore the heck out of 95% of you. The main reason apart from my busy-ness is that our minds are way too full being pre-occupied with some major life choices that we aren’t ready to put out on open airwaves. I’m ready, but it’s something we both need to be okay discussing – I always run the more personal topics by Beautiful, just in case it’s personal to her.

This is one of those topics. Of course, saying we have something to talk about without talking about it is highly annoying, so to appease a lot of curiosity, here are some things it’s NOT:

  • relationship trouble
  • health trouble
  • legal trouble
  • trouble of any kind
  • pregnancy
  • death
  • moving
  • work-related

It’s actually a very cool thing that we are both very excited about and very freaked out about at this stage. I’m fairly certain we will be ready to talk about it in the next few weeks, but I could be wrong. Please, no guessing, just know that you’ll be in on the whole thing once we decide to discuss it and that you can discuss it on both of our sites because we won’t be able to stop talking about it.

Your support means more than you know, which is why I’m giving you a non-update rather than ignoring the strange elephant in the room that no one can see.

To G-Tube or not to G-Tube

g-tubeOne of our closest online CF friends is struggling with a decision about whether or not to opt for a g-tube for her sweet baby boy. He started out life quite chunky but has reduced to the 5th percentile now that he’s around a year old. She’s asked for wisdom with the decision, so I offered my 2 cents, which she has since insisted that I give… so here it is for open discussion.

Make no mistake about it, a g-tube is a huge deal. I’m not sure if my parents ever struggled with that option for me or not, but I do remember a time when they were really being pushed by the doctors to do nightly NG tube feedings, but I have a serious gag reflex and have puked every time I receive one. Sorta defeats the benefits right off the bat when you lose your dinner before bed, in your bed.

In my opinion, there has to be an ever-present consideration for emotional well-being that ranks just below health well-being. Beautiful has told me more than a few times to stop thinking about my bad parts about childhood related to school, the other kids, and how being the odd one out most of my life shaped a significant part of my personality. I was, simply put, different. Kids are both the meanest monsters alive and the sweetest creatures created, all in the same package. They both pick on anything they can see that is different while ignoring many obvious handicaps. To me, adhering to a medical textbook’s guidelines of what is healthy at the expense of childhood development is a potentially more severe problem waiting to happen than anything associated with being a low weight, as much of a pro-weight guy as I am. Now for some explaining on my part.

I was a chubby little guy as a toddler, despite my big meconium ileus surgery that had me on super-weak formula for months. I’m pretty sure my mom still has the growth charts of my height and weight percentiles from the early years, but I remember myself being in the 5th percentile on height for as far back as I can remember. I was in a class of 72 kids and only 2 others were close to my height, but both were still taller by a smidge.
