Changing the standard of thinking.

Overwhelmed, but Blessed Nonetheless

OverwhelmedI’ve been overwhelmed lately. Plain and simple. We are still very blessed, as you’ll soon see. This will start off sad, get better, and then you can take the video at the end how you like. I may have cried (shhh!), but also was very happy at the end.

Things got pretty bad last week with my lack of appetite, anxiety, and general discontentment. When you have two people in a two-person house not feeling very well, things are bound to get blown out of proportion. We did figure out that I needed to stop taking pseudoephedrine for my stuffy nose since I found out I was stuffy because of small polyps and it was almost definitely making me anxious and depressed: two things that are very not me. I’m not immune to all puny medicine side-effects after all!

We aren’t sure how much the rest of the process of figuring out what is ailing Beautiful is going to cost, so that was adding to my anxiety as the one who has the most control over changing our income to help that out (by getting more work) or fail in epic fashion (by getting less work). STRESS!

Acapella, Flutter, Vest, or Manual CPT

Vest while WorkingLet’s get some community feedback going for the masses with this topic. It’s something we’re all familiar with unless your mutation rocks and your lungs are pristine without this much treatment. You are welcome here, anyway, but you are a rarity.

I’ve had all four of these in my years. About 13 years of manual chest physiotherapy, a couple of years trying Flutter in the car on the way to school functions, years of non-compliance with the very old Hill-Rom Vest that never stayed turned on because of that stupid foot pedal, and now a new inCourage Vest and Acapella.

Here are my thoughts and results from each:

  • Manual CPT – In my opinion, this is THE best method for airway clearance when done properly. The downsides are the obvious space/time requirement, as well as a willing second party unless you’re somehow able to do it yourself. You can’t help but cough if you have anything in a particular lobe that needs to come out. If I had unlimited time and resources, I’d opt to have this as my treatment, but I have a life/job, and so does Beautiful. It just wouldn’t work for us.
  • Flutter – I’d rank this as the second best. I was able to get the percussion sensation longer with Flutter than Acapella, so I think it did more, and I seem to remember it being a stronger feeling, even though the Acapella is adjustable. It’s so small, it’s ridiculous, not to mention it only being 3 parts and the easiest thing in our arsenal to keep sterile.
  • Vest – Not all vests are created equal. I couldn’t be happier with my inCourage Vest system that I got last August, but it serves a purpose, but not the one I thought. I don’t go crazy coughing with it, but it does a fantastic job alleviating any wheezing I have at the time. It’s quite expensive, even with insurance (our durable medical equipment co-pay was still $1200, and I have an excellent HMO package. Is it worth it to me? Absolutely.
  • Acapella – I have 2 of them that I bought out of pocket because my HMO wouldn’t pay for the device. I was keeping one in the car for my way to school if I had a wheeze and I keep one by my Vest. I find using both the Flutter and Acapella exhausting to use because of the deep breathing and strenuous spasms that follow, but I know they work.

Which method(s) is/are your preference for airway clearance?

What CFers Do: Gross Normal People Out

Maybe Gross

Careful, she may be gross...

This was by request from Beautiful after watching a Twitter conversation I was having with another CFer about our ENT visits. This conversation happened to be going on with a seemingly “cute and regular” young woman as far as her sinus surgery pre-op photo with pigtails and a big grin showed the world.

Before you know it, we’re talking about boogers and other gross sinus/nasal stuff. Quite a shock from the cultural norm, but CF girls aren’t like other girls that way. Sure, they don’t like to talk about this sort of stuff (at least I don’t gather that from our more normal conversations that happen every day), but they aren’t bothered by it. I haven’t found a guy yet who didn’t like to talk about bodily functions, so I’ve got that spectrum of the global population covered.

Topics CFers bring up that gross out others:

  • mucus
  • snot
  • boogers
  • polyps
  • enemas
  • blood (especially hymoptysis)
  • injections
  • puking
  • surgery
  • puss
  • diarrhea
  • particular things that happen that are gross as they happen

I think this should stand as a generally good reason why 2 CFers should not marry, aside from the whole issue of getting each other sick constantly and not being able to rely on the other person to be somewhat healthy enough to care for them if things should turn for the worse at some point. Can you just imagine the conversations that would go on in that house? Not to mention a number of other gross things that our spouses have discovered after moving in and realizing what they go themselves into. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sometimes you just have to say, “trust me, you don’t want to know, so you’d better stop the questions before you get details you don’t want.”
